Block paving laying patterns and waste

The laying pattern is not only a look — it decides how strong the finished area is and how many cuts you make getting there. Stretcher bond and basketweave go anywhere on foot, herringbone spreads a wheel load best on a driveway, and a mixed three-size module suits a larger yard. Angled and modular patterns cost you more blocks in waste.

Why herringbone carries a car and stretcher bond doesn’t

Block paving is not held by mortar. It is held by friction and by the interlock between blocks: when a wheel rolls over one of them, the load travels through the sand-filled joints into its neighbours. How well it travels depends on how many neighbours each block has and whether the joints form long straight lines across the area.

In stretcher bond the joints run straight through in one direction. Under a braking or turning wheel the whole course starts to creep, because nothing stops it. Herringbone is turned through 45 or 90 degrees and no joint runs straight across the paving, so a block has nowhere to go. That, and nothing else, is why herringbone is the pattern specified for anything a vehicle uses.

The same logic covers modular layouts: three sizes alternating in one repeat never build up a long continuous joint either. Basketweave sits in between — square, tidy, and fine on foot, but the joints line up in pairs and it will move if you park on it.

How much waste each pattern makes

Waste is made at the edges, where the pattern has to be cut in. A pattern running parallel to the sides of a rectangle needs cutting on two edges only. A 45° herringbone has to be cut all the way round the perimeter, and every angled cut leaves an offcut you will not use anywhere else.

The calculator starts at 8%, which is safe for most jobs. On a plain rectangle laid straight you can take it down to 5%; on 45° herringbone, on a circle kit, or on any area with bays and corners, put it up to 10%. Over 50 m² that difference is a full pallet — and a pallet bought later comes from another batch, in a slightly different shade.

When you cut, keep to the rule that runs through the standards: lay no piece smaller than 30% of a whole block. Thinner slivers crack under the plate compactor and lift out after the first winter. If the setting-out lands you on a thin strip, shift the whole pattern by half a block and take one out of the opposite course.

Choosing a pattern

Load and shape decide it. The heavier the traffic, the sooner you go to herringbone; the narrower and more broken-up the area, the simpler the pattern should be, because every corner is another set of cuts. Set the pattern out before you order the blocks, not after — ordering short and topping up is how you end up with two shades on one driveway.

One thing worth saying to customers who are choosing on looks alone: the pattern is the smallest part of whether the job lasts. What carries the car is the sub-base underneath and how well it was compacted.

What is the best block paving pattern for a driveway?

Herringbone, laid at 45° or 90°. No joint runs straight across the area, so a braking or turning wheel has nothing to push a block along — it spreads the load into its neighbours instead. Basketweave and stretcher bond look fine but move under a car.

What pattern suits a path or a patio?

Stretcher bond or basketweave. Both are quick to lay, both look right on a narrow strip, and neither has to carry a vehicle. On a bigger patio a mixed-size module gives a less repetitive finish.

Which pattern wastes the most blocks?

Anything cut at an angle. A 45° herringbone is cut all the way round the perimeter, and a circle kit has to be cut into whatever pattern surrounds it — allow 8-10% on those against 5% on a straight-laid rectangle.

What is a circle kit?

A pack of tapered blocks that lay up into a finished circle, usually 1.8 to 3.6m across, sold with the ring sizes already worked out. The circle itself is easy; the cost is in cutting the surrounding paving in around it.
